Maxthon Browser

Today I got this new browser (I don’t care if many of you know it from before and have a better version already in use). But it sucks. I downloaded (hehe! from my free CD) out of curiosity and simply because it’s free (GNU guys). But it sucks!

Wikipedia says it has the following features

Features

  • Tabbed document interface
  • Saves open tabs in case of program shutdown or system crash
  • Undo for any tabs accidentally closed
  • AD Hunter - an advert-blocking utility that blocks pop-ups, banners, and floating ads in web pages
  • Flash, Java applet and ActiveX blocker
  • Skinnable
  • Customizable tabs and interface
  • Programmable mouse gestures
  • External utility bar - toolbar that allows you to open third-party programs
  • RSS reader
  • Supports many Internet Explorer plugins as well as plugins of its own
  • Partial Gecko engine support with the use of a third-party program
  • A search toolbar with 8 different search engines (user extendable)
  • Automatic updating service
  • Groups - the ability to bookmark & open multiple pages simultaneously
  • URL aliases - open URLs by just typing a word in the address bar
  • Simple collector - a small notepad-like utility, used to collect any text from web pages. You can write scripts in it and run them in the current webpage
  • Integrated web services - user extendable, but by default includes translators, Google's cached version of pages, anonymous web proxies

Version 2.1

The release version of Maxthon 2.1 is currently available for download on the official website. New features in versions 2.0 and 2.1 include:

  • Multi-user support
  • Content blocker
  • Improved Performance & Stability
  • Maxthon Smart Accelerator
  • Magic Fill
  • Link validator
  • Improved FavIcon support
  • Improved favorite search
  • Favorite + Feed manager
  • Automatic online favorite & feed synchronization
  • Page find tool
  • Plug-in installer
  • Plug-in + Skin updater
  • Improved proxy support
  • Tab manager
  • Frameless mode
  • New Configuration Interface
  • Anti-Freeze

Why it sucks? It has a great feature which I’ll tell only after I tell its sucking saga. I opened Wikipedia and was surprised to see that suddenly I could see very clear and things on-screen appeared very large. I tried to shrink the page (Ctrl+Scroll Down De-zoom, you know!?) and it came down to 10%n but still I could feel the difference For a guy with specs since the age of 7 its certainly not so painful to tell when a page has shrunk down to 10%. But I wasn’t! Then further I noticed that (from my Wiki instincts) some portion is missing (the portion where the details are given, be it man, machine or microbe; on the left side; top), then I noticed my horizontal scroll bar was actually stretching a mile. I got this déjà vu when I open some images or an audio file by the beloved NOTEPAD.

Rest everything was OK. Latest version available for download under the update scheme is 2.1.4. The best things...OK two features that were cool

Firstly, it can be personalized. On being opened for the first time it asks for your choice of opening a personalized account or a normal one! Now, a personal account is one that would obviously store you online (on Maxthon server). That means your last pages, favorite web pages, passwords and many more fractures that are normally stored by cookies on your computer will be stored online (on Maxthon’s server). In short cookies will not be stored in your computer (wow!).

And, remember by blog about SNAGIT? F man! This browser has an inbuilt SNAGIT! All the features that SNAGIT has! But then why am I not crying? That’s because it can’t capture videos! Lala! And some of the other features which I didn’t find else were ‘CPU CONTROL’ (can turn off JAVASCRIPTs and FLASHs), ‘CONTENT CONTROL’ (gives you option to disable images, scripts, ActiveX Objects, etc) and a ‘FILE SNIFFER.

It’s a EULA product. Maxthon, formerly known as “MyIE2” is a China-based freeware (more specifically donateware) web browser for Windows. From its early MyIE2 roots, Maxthon has developed a growing user base, especially in China, and in 2006 it received commercial backing for Maxthon 2.0. It uses the TRIDENT layout engine, just like Microsoft's Internet Explorer, but it can use the Gecko engine used in Mozilla Firefox as well. Maxthon seeks to provide many rich features and a highly customizable interface, without losing any of the compatibility of Internet Explorer.

In January 2006, Maxthon developers partnered with Microsoft in its booth at the “Consumer Electronics Show”. Maxthon is reported to be the second most popular browser in China, and it has been downloaded more than 150 million times worldwide.

If you have liked the features, which I have mentioned in the preceding two paragraphs then forget para 3. But still it sucks. The thought of that Wikipedia page still gives me Goosebumps. I’m going to uninstall it, NOW!!!

Kudos FOLKS!
